Overview
Madaba lies about 30 km south of Amman and is known as the City of Mosaics. In the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George is a mosaic map of the Holy Land from the sixth century, made of more than two million small stones, with Jerusalem at its centre.
From there it is a short drive to Mount Nebo, where tradition says Moses looked across to the Promised Land before he died. On a clear day the view takes in the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and the hills around Jerusalem. The Franciscan memorial has fine mosaics, and the serpentine cross on the terrace is a landmark of the summit.
